Currently, BNP Paribas is the premier sponsor in world tennis. Having backed tennis since 1973 through the French Open/Roland Garros, the bank has been able to prove its capacity for adaptation through a partnership policy in line with the Group's values. In choosing a major tennis tournament for its communication, the bank had a nose for the spectacular development that the discipline was to undergo in the early 1980s. The impact of the tournament across the world made a huge contribution to raising awareness of the new group brand to emerge from the merger between BNP and Paribas. In 1986, the bank helped to set up the Paris Open winter tournament at Bercy, which has since been renamed the "BNP Paribas Masters" and become a major event on the ATP circuit. In 2002, as the pace of its development as an international concern quickened, the bank became the title sponsor of the Davis Cup.
